Name: Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Breakdown: incisions to remove veins

Description: tiny incisions or punctures are made, through which the veins are removed with a hook

Pain Factor: local anesthesia

Aftermath: compression bandage and/or stocking

Possible Side Effects: local numbness


Name: Transilluminated Powered Phlebectomy (TIPP)

Breakdown: veins are illuminated and then removed

For: varicose veins

Description: The TriVex® system is used to illuminate the veins, which the surgeon removes through two small incisions.

Time: 30 minutes

Pain Factor: large volume of local anesthesia

Aftermath: return to work in 2-3 days


Name: Vein Ligation

Breakdown: tying off of the vein

For: varicose veins and underlying veins

Description: incisions are made and the vein is tied off

Time: 30 minutes

Pain Factor: large volume of local anesthesia

Aftermath: return to work in 2-3 days

Success: 90%

Possible Side Effects: recurrence and scarring


Name: Vein Stripping

Breakdown: veins are tied off and removed

For: varicose veins

Description: incisions are made at the top and bottom of the vein, then veins are tied off and pulled out from under the skin

Pain Factor: general anesthesia

Success: 90%

Possible Side Effects: scarring, damage to surrounding nerves
