Joseph Schiro, MD, FACS, founder and medical director of the Vein Center of Sarasota, Fla., is one of only 18 vein specialists in Florida and 248 nationwide (as of presstime) who are board-certified in phlebology by the American Board of Phlebology. Dr. Schiro is also board-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and has been practicing cardiac and thoracic surgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital since 1984.
It was erroneously reported in the last issue that another doctor was the only one certified in phlebology in Manatee and Sarasota counties. The number of phlebology board-certified doctors will increase dramatically as the second exam results should be reported any day.
In addition to his active cardiac surgical practice, Dr. Schiro has developed a keen interest in lower extremity venous disease and has been actively involved with the minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins since 2002.
Dr. Schiro was instrumental in establishing the cardiac surgery program at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He is a past chief of cardiac surgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
